Christmas Tree Recycling Project
The Christmas Tree Recycling Project is returning this year. Due to the huge success last year in raising over £31,000 for local charities through the scheme it made sense to bring it back.
The benefits of this project are:
Brings awareness about the importance of disposing of tree responsibly.
Directs a large number of trees to be repurposed locally or recycled.
Reduces the number of trees left for kerbside garden waste crews to collect (often people leave trees out if they are not signed up to the services, so the number was high for crews before we started this project).
The three organisations we support as a result of this programme are:
Noah’s Ark Zoo and Farm
Trees are dropped at the Zoo during a period in January. A large proportion are used to enrich habitats for the animals and the rest are chipped for land regeneration at the Zoo.
If they receive more than they can manage, there may be some overflow of trees that will come to the Aisecome Way Transfer Station.
St Peter’s Hospice
They complete collections in the North of the district and will drop a proportion of trees at the Zoo collection point.
Their collections are scheduled for the 10th, 11th & 12th January 25.
Weston Hospice
They complete a one-day collection in the Weston area – they’ve scheduled for 11th January 25.
Using volunteers and rented vans they drop trees off at the Aisecome Way Transfer Station to be recycled with garden waste. All participants complete a site induction beforehand and will wear correct PPE. There will be a volunteer to co-ordinate vans as they arrived stationed at the weighbridge to sign groups in and out.
Last year they collected around 800 trees – they’re hoping to extend the reach this year.
